It depends what distro. you build on. SLES-8, which is what we did the original work on on has 64 bit gcc set up as a cross-compiler. Newer distro's (SLES-9/RHAS3.0) -m64 works.
-m64 is more correct, but may not work for everyone either.
Upcoming HEAD snapshot uses -m64. Please test. Note updated ./config:-) As for [apparently] outdated -b powerpc64-linux, we can always document it in PROBLEMS and suggest to './Configure linux-ppc64 -b powerpc64-linux' as workaround. A.
