The latter proposed change, quoting DEVRANDOM, shall have adverse effect on other platforms. Can you elaborate on the error during compilation instead? As for mtu and sock_type. Is it possible to resolve it by

I think I have finally found the proper fix, however. This patch is
against openssl 0.9.8 beta-3. It removes the quoting of DEVRANDOM and
quotes "$(BUILDENV)" in crypto/Makefile.

Quoting $(BUILDENV) also has adverse effect, because it effectively assigns the whole thing to first variable in it, PLATFORM to be specific, instead of passing down a bunch of variables...

The problems started when I attempted to collect BUILDENV in one single place in $(TOP)/Makefile, and apparently got lost in the maze of small differences between SysV-ish and GNU makes. But I now get the idea and am on it. A.
