how to select a symmetry Encryption?

hi all
     i want to use AES128 as symmetry Encryption when i transport data after 
ihaving checked peer's ID.
how to select a symmetry Encryption?
use EVP_CipherInit_ex after initial a EVP_CIPHER_CTX objet ,then creat a ssl  
and use ssl_write  ssl_read?
