Ok. If there's a way we can improve that document I want to know. It's
a complex topic.

When OpenSSL 1.0.2 is released the User Guide will be updated to state
"1.0.1 and 1.0.2" as the current FIPS module will also be compatible
with 1.0.2.

I think the description is perfectly fine.

I only got mislead by the initial email of this thread as it refers to
version 1.0.0. But throughout most of my work, I am working with 1.0.1
and thus somehow overlooked the last digit.

That and 'l' looks a lot like '1', so 1.0.0l could be mistaken for 1.0.01  ;)

But seriously, I thought when openssl went with 1.0.0 they might
enhance their versioning and drop the letter suffix such that
1.0.0l would actually be 1.0.13 ... and 1.0.1f would actually
be 1.1.7 ... and so on...

Because of this unique versioning, I think it causes confusion, but
that's just my $0.02 and probably doesn't have any relevance to
this discussion.
