Fortunately, I haven't seen this issue since 1.0.2a, so I suspect it
was some other bug being exposed in a strange way, that has since been
resolved.

Specifically, my best guess based on the behaviour seen is this code
was the "corrupted multiblock pointer" bug that was mentioned as
resolved in the 1.0.2a changelog.
