sorry for breaking in...

why not have verisign (or thawte?) make a new certificate for openssl 
0.9.5a+mod_ssl-2.6.3+apache 1.3.12 ?

(from what i remember you need to specify what nos you're using when 
ordering the cert)

i bet the issuer/customer had no clue about the fact that the 
certificate was to be used in a non nt, iis4 environment...
