Importing a certificate into IE

Is there a way to automate the process of importing a certificate file
into IE?  The current way that I am using involves going to 
'internet options' and importing a certificate file from the certificates
section of the content tab.  While this is perfectly reasonable for one or
even a few machines, I am looking for something that would make it easy to
do on a larger scale.  
Something like using a registry patch, or some other scriptable or
programmable way.
