i also tried this. the compilation went fine but shared libraries were not
built or installed even though i configured OpenSSL with:

        ./Configure shared -DUSE_TOD -DPEDANTIC rhapsody-ppc-cc

why doesn't the 'shared' option work on Darwin?

on the other hand 'otool -L /usr/bin/openssl' hints that the OpenSSL
libraries that came with the operating system distribution are installed
as shared libraries.

Mail.app or one of its components are probably linked against the shared
OpenSSL libraries shipped with the OS.
