I hate to distract from the original issue, but what is ethereal? Some kind of dump or sniffer? Where can it be found?

Forgive the obvious answer...
Your apache is listening on port 443 and your app is configured to
only send SSL (HTTPS) on that port?
Download ethereal and have a look at what's happening on the wire.
Its a good investment of a half hour.
