Yes, that does solve this problem. Thank you very much.
Now we just have to find the best solution to the problem that we have
many existing clients that do not use this option, because our old SSL
server solution did not require it.

included in SSL_OP_ALL, which you can specify by suppling "-bugs" to
s_client.
