why SSL_CTX_new returns null pointer -how to avoid

I tried to establish client server connection . but when i tried to
set up the ssl context using  SSL_CTX_new(SSLv23_client_method())
method this returns only null.can anyone please help how to avoid this
error.I tried using VC++
