It actually turned out to be that I was missing a cleanup of the
locks. Specifically, I was missing "CRYPTO_set_id_callback( NULL );"
as below:

        CRYPTO_set_locking_callback( ( void (*)( int, int, const char *, int
) ) openSSLLockCB );
}

        CRYPTO_set_locking_callback( NULL );
}
