I was able to solve the problem. For some reason my system didn't like
the "if exist * $(RM) *" commands in ms/mingw32a.mak:
$(O_SSL): $(SSLOBJ)
if exist $(O_SSL) $(RM) $(O_SSL)
$(MKLIB) $(O_SSL) $(SSLOBJ)
$(RANLIB) $(O_SSL)
$(O_CRYPTO): $(CRYPTOOBJ)
if exist $(O_CRYPTO) $(RM) $(O_CRYPTO)
$(MKLIB) $(O_CRYPTO) $(CRYPTOOBJ)
$(RANLIB) $(O_CRYPTO)
I commented both out and everything compiled successfully.
