What exactly do you mean by "works"? Were you able to decrypt messages encrypted with the public key corresponding to the unmodified private key? > Ideally when the characters in the private key is changed it should not work. Why would that be? Is there some scenario you envision where an attacker might get hold of a slightly-corrupted private key?
