Apache Qpid is an Apache Software Foundation project aiming to help promote the AMQP protocol by open, collaborative development of libraries, services and tools that use it. It includes many different components now. So the 'qpid' in the name of the different components denotes the community from which they originated. Hopefully that makes it less confusing.
