Hi Lars - Sounds like you're really looking for a conceptual understanding and I like that! Keystone does maintain the service catalog, and the Image service (glance) needs specific entries. See http://docs.openstack.org/essex/openstack-compute/install/yum/content/keystone-concepts.html.
I believe glance_host and glance_port are deprecated and not needed in an Essex installation, use only glance_api_servers in the nova.conf.
