The simplest way would be to create key/value pairs for flavor types (instance types). This information would be associated in a separate table in nova db (instance_type_extra_specs) and would go along with the instance type.
Once it is in the database, you can use this information to customize all kinds of things like the nova scheduler, additional data that can be passed to the instance at the time of the creation. This is the high level overview. If you search the mailing list archives you will find some additional discussion about this topic.
