+1 for pointing out the correct solution about this problem!
Just to write down for future reference that after installing
dracut-modules-growroot
I had to rebuild the initramfs using dracut --force in order for it to
work.

i think the other is for debian distros as i can not find in yum

yeah, you need dracut-modules-growroot
it comes from epel repo
after install (in your golde image), rebuild your /boot/initramfs
mkinitrd
is your friend ,not as good friend as update-initramfs but still a
friend.
the old kernel that comes with centos 6 is to blame
