My main question is still open - is this a known bug or should I report

I didn't need CD 4 and 5 - but that sounds like a funny effect.

You mean the box says "system analyses" forever? (translated back from 
german, but you should get the point)

I just skipped it and didn't notice problems yet ;-)

Try   sax2 -m 0=vesa   as workaround (found in Bug 148211) - this worked 
for me (IIRC only after a "init 6")
