You might try "hdparm -U" then "hdparm -R",
but FIRST READ THE MAN PAGE about hdparm, and contents of "/usr/share/doc/packages/hdparm"!

I have NEVER tried this myself, so do it on your own risk.
(allthough I don't think it can do any real damage except mess your data, but you are doing regular backups, aren't you?)
