I have seen this as well, although it is not consistant. Volume was fine with my on-board card, but that card was unstable (AmaroK would crash frequently). I switched to a USB audio card which is more stable, but it exhibits the volume change problem with the helix engine. I love AmaroK, and use it all the time at home on my custom box. I think it is one of the best audio apps I have every used on any platform. On my work computer (Dell Presision 530), however, it is just too unstable. I have ended up reverting back to XMMS.
