And as a side note, KDE has a similar system, where configuration settings of 
KDE applications are
stored in
- - $HOME/.kde/share/config/ (*)
- - $HOME/.kde/share/apps/.../ (**)

(*) a single file, e.g. ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc
(**) a subdirectory per application, e.g. ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/
(although the latter is rather for "runtime files" than settings, but some 
configuration stuff might
reside there as well)
