This shouldn't be necessary with libdvdcss. If standard authorization
doesn't work, it does a brute-force attack on the keys.

Does the disk play in a stand-alone player?

The disk is clean and plays OK in other machines, yes. Actually I have multiple 
disks and they're all exhibiting something like this. Only certain vobs fail to 
decrypt (judging from the messages) but that seems to be enough to persuade 
xine to give up and complain with comments like "are you sure you have read 
privilege for this device?"

All very sad :(
