The problems still remains however in that I still have no hardware 3D and GL
is still painfully slow.

What's confounding me is that Xorg's log states the direct rendering is
enabled but then throws this line near the end:

(II) GLX: Initialized MESA-PROXY GL provider for screen 0

and glxinfo | grep render as follows:

direct rendering: No
    GLX_ATI_pixel_format_float, GLX_ATI_render_texture
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

and hence the fallback to software. Where's the problem. Something living in
ram (doesn't appear to be)? A temp file that needs clearing? Something
in /etc/ati (I now have 5 inst_path_default.backup files)? Or, the fglrxrc
in /etc/ati? the fbmodes files, the atievnetsd (unlikely),
xgl-fglrx-setup.sh (also unlikely- but maybe). I can't find anything yet
that would explain the software fallback.

TIA, Curtis.
