I think there's some confusion. The character that Scott typed - ` - is a *backtick*. A *tilde* looks like this - ~ -. <http://www.cs.sfu.ca/~ggbaker/reference/characters/> A pair of backticks works as Patrick described. A tilde is short for your home directory.
