good grief! That did it! I did not get a chance to edit anything, it
took me to a video config screen, and then prompted me to save, and
then closed. I rebooted normally, and was able to login. The sound
system was fine, but I did have to specify a monitor and change the
resolution to 1024 x 768 again ...

Thanx so so much ... I'd still like to know why simply setting 3d
acceleration would DO something like that ... but, I'm back working.
