If that fails, you could boot from your install disk, and on the third-or-so screen, instead of install choose "repair installed system". Hopefully one of those routes will replace the corrupted keyboard configuration in X.
good grief! That did it! I did not get a chance to edit anything, it took me to a video config screen, and then prompted me to save, and then closed. I rebooted normally, and was able to login. The sound system was fine, but I did have to specify a monitor and change the resolution to 1024 x 768 again ... Thanx so so much ... I'd still like to know why simply setting 3d acceleration would DO something like that ... but, I'm back working.
