I have used pppd directly for a long period. I currently have a broadband
wireless connection (to the ISP antenna about 1 mile away) which is handled
by a server machine in my house. I use pppoe to the wireless recvr.

But often, if the wireless goes down, I switch to pppd on my main machine
connected to a normal modem.

pppd has always worked fine for me and as you know, is the service that always
ends up being used no matter front end you use to set it up.
