Did you run nvidia-xconfig?
OK. Tried that, but glxgears still gives same output.
To make sure the nvidia drivers are loaded, you might try a hail mary
play: run "depmod -a" and then "modprode nvidia" and restart the X
session with CTRL-ALT-BKSP
