        time echo "scale=1010; 16*a(1/5)-4*a(1/239)" |bc -lq

        The above will compute PI to 1000+ decimal places in about 300-400 ms 
on a 
modern PC.  But, if you set scale sufficiently high---- say,   200000  then 
the cpu will become quite warm... and will not damage anything.
