Dear list

I got one strange problem with NFS. When I move around 4GB of data from
local HDD to the mounted NFS directory, the whole machine "freeze":
      * X freeze
      * ssh cannot login
      * if there is an ssh session already logged-in, it hangs when I
        issue any command (but works if I do in-command-line editing)

Usually when this happen, I go make some coffee and it take around 5 min
to recover to normal status, and I know it will freeze later, so I try
to move file from/to mounted NFS directory in lunch time.

NFS client (SuSE 10.2) is connected to NFS server through a
not-very-stable 1MB/s connection. By not-very-stable I mean the
connection seems sometimes suddenly stall for one minute or so, this is
observed by using remote X session: it sometimes stall for a minute, but
never stall as long as 'freeze' caused by NFS transfer. But I am really
not sure if the connection is not good enough: I can still ping the NFS
server from the computer next to the frozen NFS client.

I don't know how to ask this question smart enough to make it really
clear to everyone who wish to help. Trying my best.

My question is: even if the connection is not good, why it 'freeze' my
workstation? I should get a cripple NFS copy process if the NFS
connection is cripple, but I should not get a cripple workstation if the
NFS connection is cripple. I am pretty sure non other process than the
copy process would access the mounted NFS directory: well, maybe unless
if beagle happen to be working on that NFS directory because it's in
someone's home folder, but really non other process is supposed to
access the NFS directory except the copying process.

Thanks in advance.
Best Regards
