Hi Robert, I don't use Kdar or anything similar... but I guess that your problem comes from your OpenSuSE not mounting correctly the USB device... which version of SuSE do you use?? there was a known glitch on this issue...
Try to remount it withour the "sync" option and see if this goes faster... HTH!
