To backup your data I would suggest to use rsysnc. But as you are doing it only twice yearly, imho, it doesn't really matter.
For example, I am using rsnapshot for all my backup activities. This uses rsync for the purpose. I am backing up just personal data on one linux server and from one windows XP client, all saved to a usb disk that is connected to the linux server.
