Silly intel...

I have used this with the stock and proprietary Nvidia drivers. They
seem to honor it. In addition, xdpyinfo lists my settings:

screen #0:
  dimensions:    1600x1200 pixels (419x335 millimeters)

So, choose your hardware carefully :)
