Actually I think the answer is rather simple... reading the Eclipse Docs
they recommend Java 5 not 6, now a long time ago (Eclipse 2 days I
think) I did for a while run Eclipse on an earlier version working with
a later SDK. (The trick was to have the working JRE separate from the
development JRE and SDK IIRC). You could do things like that then...

Dunno what the situation for this is at the moment as I am working on
some Perl stuff with EPIC and still enjoying the experience of working
on Perl with a proper debugger (among other things) .. :-)
