Firefox uses lockfiles to allow only one firefox process to occur at a time.

There are at least two types of lockfiles which can be deleted should
Firefox lock up in the way in which you have seen.  They are located at:

/home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>.default/lock

and

/home/<user>/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>.default/.parentlock

where <user> is the username in question and <profile> is a long unique
string of characters.
