Auto rescan is supposed to happen now for many drivers. To check your hardware's support, see http://linux-ata.org/driver-status.html#matrix (this is actually 6-9 months old) And to manually rescan: echo - - - > /sys/class/scsi_host/hostX/scan Remember, sata drives are handled by the scsi subystem, so you're actually invoking a scsi rescan.
