Felix,

        Are you sure you can't simply use smbclient with 10.3? On my 10.3
install it is there. I haven't tried mounting a legacy machine (none
here) but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Also, what error are you
getting with cifs? So far it has always worked for me (no test on legacy
machines). Here is the output from 10.3:
