The pop settings on my account were disabled. this fixed the problem. I
guess its like the tab setting on Firefox getting turned back on with
some of the updates. Very annoying if you prefer tabs turned off.

A couple of obvious, simple thoughts:
Have you logged onto the gmail web interface for your account and
checked your "spam" folder lately? A lot of opensuse email ends up there
for my account even though I try and train it otherwise :-/ Also, have
you double-checked your gmail settings in case pop has become
disabled?
