The "relay=none" is interesting. When I send email, I get the remote mail 
server as relay

The error message isn't saying that it can't find gmail.com, it says it can't 
find localhost. What I can't understand here is why it's looking for it in 
the first place

Did you set up any relay rules, or anything else?

What do you get in /var/log/mail when you send from the command line?
