So my question is what is the best program to convert my huge collection of
music CD's to MP3 format so that I can load the music on the MP3 player.

Konqueror do that natively - setup the mp3 values in the kde control
center and open the cd (it should ask when introducing the cd), you
can extract with any know format (wav, ogg, mp3...)
