I just created a new account and saw that the Shutdown feature works just fine with that one. Do you think that it has something to do with GNOME configuration?
Well, then at least is not what I was thinking about, but I don't know what it is. Maybe your default user is not authorized to power off, but I don't remember off-hand where this is configured. Login features or thereabouts, I suppose. Somebody else will know.
