I encountered a similar problem before.

First you should do is to ensure that your Java is installed
correctly. Run the following on the command line

java -version

If your Java is working correctly, you can take a look at
http://www.rojakcoder.com/wordpress/2008/01/03/trouble-with-java-applets-with-firefox-on-opensuse/

I share my experience (struggle) with Java before. Maybe you can get
some insight from there?
