It turns out that SF.net *does* have a "search archives" feature on their mailing lists, as advertised; it's just put in with all the admin crap on the left side of the screen, which is pretty much not where I'd expected it to be. Adding injury to insult, once you've searched once, it puts a search box where you DO expect it (with the search results). C'est la vie.
