What are the drawbacks of this approach?

Not too many... I suppose the NPE problem could crop up.. It also makes your design a bit unclear to novices ("Where'd the Connection come from?"), but these are pretty minor.
Are there really no other drawbacks you can think of? Please try a little harder.
I can think of quite a few, but as I said, I wanted to get your view first.
