I did not see it when doing my template refactoring work this weekend. I 
agree it would be a good thing to add. If my changes get adopted, I would 
propose to add this at the AbstractTemplateTag (new base class for 
template based tags) level since the functionality is generally applicable 
and not not limited to XHTML tags.
