I have to say that I am an old velocity user, so it was no mistake that I continued to use the Velocity template engine in my whole webapp. However I realized Velocity is actually not a good choice if you picked it up especially because you can use taglibs. Restictions are obviously there, for instance, you cannot use the great displaytag taglibs in its new version beta2. And like I didn't want to use jsp, I turned to Freemarker. That was a happy choice. One minute to install and configure Freemarker. Ten minutes / view to migrate my views from velocity to freemarker, it's really easy. A wonderfull jsp taglibs support. And I can talk about performance, I wrote many testcases with Jameleon, an automated testing tool. So comparing the execution time with 2 different view engine was very easy. I bet Velocity was faster, it was the case, but the difference if very minor for me (about 5% of performance difference), and I consider this test is valuable because my webapp has many templates and which are very different. Ok, i stop here, I'm so lazy, my feedback was just to say Freemarker is a valuable and powerfull alternative to Velocity and I have nothing to win by saying this. Cheers.
