Hello,

I have a client that uses the ATOM processor, and for some reason I don't get
any sound out of it. The sound card is seen, and according to the mixer, there
is nothing muted and the volume is up on everything. If I boot to 10.04, the
sound card works without issue.

I decided that perhaps a kernel upgrade would be in order, since for this sound
card (integrated, ICH7 STAC92xx) there appears to be some issues with the
kernel driver. I upgraded the kernel using apt-get, as well as copying the
files over and manually linking them, and it fails every time with something
like the following message:

Server Authorization directory (daemon/ServAuthDir) is set to /var/lib/gdm but
is not owned by user root and group gdm. Please correct the ownership or GDM
configuration and restart GDM.

If I change the ownership, then I get a permissions error... fix that, it
finally dies with an unknown error.

Is there something I am missing here? Why does changing the kernel cause GDM
not to boot correctly?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Paul
