I think you have installed the openjdk vm.

If it is so, you have to remove openjdk and install sun-java6-jre
package (and optionally sun-java6-plugin).

Packages are ready made, but you have to enable "partner" repos by
removing the hading # in /etc/apt/sources.list on a line like this:

#deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner
