vmwareplayer could be a nice try, but it is slow for sure. consider to 
install it in a running client the "normal way" - just to test what 
happens. give the client as much memory as you have. later build a package 
according to:

Currently you can use ssh for shutdown and WOL for wakeup.

unfortunately there is no cooperation with LTSP yet.
