Ok. Bit more trying things and I have found the reason:

I had installed the openthin server component in a virtual PC running XP SP3
on VMWare ESXi 4.1. I also ran the Manager component on the same virtual PC.

When I installed the openthin server and manager on real hardware running XP
SP3, then all of the problems I had below disappear. This time I used an old
Dell Optiplex GX270 as the thin PC.

My rationale was that thin client computing is all about running on virtual
hardware, so why wouldnt this software work on virtual hardware too. Silly
me.

You might want to test this senario, as I am sure others will want it too.

Thanks John

Subject: [openthinclient-user] Desktop not starting

Hello,

I have downloaded the OpenThinClient software. Followed the documentation on
setting it up. It set up easily. Got a PC to connect. It used PXE to
download. Got the startup screen - all seemed to load OK - got all "green
OKs".

Then things seem to go wrong. Sometimes I get the splash screen, sometimes
not. Sometimes the splash screen only goes away when I click on it. I then
get a black screen with a cursor (which moves) but nothing else. Sometimes I
get a white screen with two icons in the top left corner and three icons in
the top right corner. One of the left icons has a tool-tip and can be
pressed (although it does not seem to do anything). The blue icon changes
color with a mouse rollover. If I click on it, everything locks up (except
mouse arrow). The right icons show moving red bars and the occasional moving
green lines.

Although I have configured my user name with all of the standard
applications, I get none of them on the screen.

The PC I am using is a Dell Optiplex 745 dual core with plenty of memory and
a Broadcom NIC.

The ThinClient log has some entries that look suspicious:

I also noticed that the disk light on the PC was flashing occasionally,
which is a worry because it has a Windows OS on it.

Any ideas on why is doesnt work for me or why it seems intermittent in what
it does?

If you need more info (like the full log) or more specs on the PC, please
let me know and I will get them.

Thanks John
